For at least the past two years, the municipality of Mulegé has been hit by hydrometeorological phenomena, which, while they have provided the much-needed moisture, also cause serious damage to public and private property, which is why they are already concerned every time the so-called ‘toritos’ are forecast.
Such was the case of the downpour that occurred on Tuesday, August 20, in the early morning, when a heavy rain, accompanied by winds and electrical discharges, caused runoff from the high areas that affected streets and roads, puddles, landslides, sinkholes and the felling of trees, branches, posts and some advertisements and signs.
Given this scenario, the municipal government took on the task of clearing some of the main accesses, where stone and mud had accumulated, as well as covering the furrows that were formed in the ground by the water runs.
“The toritos already have us super scared; “Thank God it didn’t get worse,” said the municipal president, Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, after expressing that, however, they know that they are in hurricane season, and therefore they have done the prior survey on the conditions of supply of drinking water, food, and other supplies, in local commerce.
On the other hand, she mentioned that the rain brought joy in the Sierras of San Miguel, El Patrocinio, San José de Magdalena, in the Laguna de San Ignacio, and in the same community of the same name, as well as in the southern area of the municipality, such as Heroica Mulegé, Palo Verde, San Bruno, San Lucas, Santa Agüeda, among others, because this humidity benefits them in an important way in their productive activities.
The Mayor commented that the experiences of recent years have allowed them to be more careful in prevention, in order to be able to respond in a more timely manner to this type of contingency, in addition to the fact that there are damages from previous meteors, which are still being repaired, because there are not enough resources for their immediate attention.
Although the Mayor published photos of the street and road recovery work on her social networks, the reality is that there is a forecast of more rains or ‘toritos’ of this type in that region, for which she stated that they will be attentive, and citizens have also been asked to take the necessary precautions.
