The above would have been the result of the security strategies implemented to combat this crime, which in 2023 had an alarming trend at the state level. According to Cancino Vicente, these prevention measures have managed to neutralize the operations of the extortionists.
“The crime of telephone extortion has been inhibited too much, we have the latest report that almost 3 million pesos that have not been deposited by people due to this type of extortion have been neutralized. And we continue to spread the word to prevent with these measures that are very simple, but unfortunately many times we do not follow them and we fall into this type of telephone extortion.”
A report obtained from the Cyber Police control center in BCS, revealed that from January to July of this year, 44 cases of telephone extortion have been registered throughout the state. Compared to the same period in 2023, where 91 cases were accumulated.
The modus operandi of criminals is to take advantage of the fear and desperation of victims, seeking to obtain profits under threats of kidnapping, death or even inventing having a family member deprived of liberty to demand ransom for him.
The official also explained that through collaborations with financial institutions and the implementation of advanced monitoring technologies, suspicious transfers have been identified and blocked in real time.
“It is a reality that we are paying more attention to now, because fortunately and due to the efficiency shown by the cyber police, there is more knowledge of this crime, more protection in bank branches and more contact with citizens.”
Through its social media channels, the Public Security Secretariat of Baja California Sur has recommended that citizens not give in to the demands of extortionists and immediately report any extortion attempt to the emergency hotline in order to dismantle the extortion networks.
