The policies announced by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, will not “scare away” the arrival of tourists from the United States to Mexico or to Los Cabos, one of the most visited destinations by Americans and where they spend the most in all of Latin America.
“They are not going to stop coming, the gringos will be castrated first (before) they stop vacationing and they love Los Cabos. Trump should also come, he was going to be my partner, but he didn’t have money,” says Ernesto Coppel, owner and developer of hotels at the opening of VIP Summit in Los Cabos.
For more than two decades, Americans have been the tourists who travel the most to Mexico.
Not only those who travel the most, but also those who generate the most foreign currency: between January and July of this year, Americans spent around 10,572 million dollars during their vacations in Mexico, a growth of 75 percent compared to the same period before the pandemic according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.

Los Cabos, a luxury destination and the favorite of Americans
In Los Cabos, the flow of American tourism continues to be the most important in terms of international arrivals, with more than 41 percent between January and August, with just over 1.4 million tourists of that nationality arriving by air.
After the elections in the United States, says Mauricio Salicrup, president of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, there was an upturn in the arrival of tourists from that country.
“The elections were strongly influenced by the fact that they happened and immediately the bell of the safe started ringing, a volume of reservations started arriving that we had not managed during the whole year,” says Salicrup in an interview.
Los Cabos is considered a luxury destination in Latin America and one of the favorite places for foreign tourists.
Positioned as the luxury destination in Latin America – with rates reaching 45 thousand dollars for a night in a villa – and an average rate of 500 dollars per night in a hotel, Los Cabos remains one of the few destinations in the country that continues to grow in volume and rate.
In the destination, maintaining the rate is a priority
For Rodrigo Esponda, general director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, efforts have been concentrated on the promotion, diversification and management of the destination.
“We have to contribute to the care of the destination,” Esponda remarks in an interview.
In addition, the destination has focused on growing in a moderate way, with increasingly smaller properties and European consumption plans, a guideline that has gone hand in hand with the development of the gastronomic tone of Los Cabos.
“The members themselves see that the destination prioritizes maintaining the rate,” adds the director of Fiturca.
For now, tourist arrivals on private planes have increased 20 percent so far this year and it is expected that the volume of tourists will close this year with a growth of 1 percent, a positive result in the face of the slowdown in international tourism arriving in Mexico.
