Construction of the Cabo San Lucas Women’s Justice Center, a project that was scheduled to be completed by March 15, 2025, remains unfinished.
Although the project was announced with great anticipation, there is still no set date for its opening.
Why has the construction of the Cabo San Lucas Women’s Justice Center been delayed?
Apparently, the facility is not yet finished because, although it has made progress, important parts are still missing.
According to Baja California Sur Attorney General Daniel de la Rosa, the project is 60% complete, but needs more equipment to begin operating.
Furthermore, in July 2024, Frida Salgado Estrada, coordinator of the Women’s Justice Center, reported that eight offices were planned for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, with a budget of 4 million pesos.
The goal was to improve care so that women seeking help would have a closer space.
However, despite the state government’s assurances that it has already allocated a 9,000-square-meter plot of land, similar to that of the Justice Center in La Paz.
With funding from the Public Security Contribution Fund (FASP), delivery times have not been met.
To try to curb this problem, InDrive and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have launched an initiative to combat gender-based violence.
What gender-based violence problems does Los Cabos face?
Gender-based violence is a problem that has been increasing in the state, but especially in the municipality of Los Cabos, which has registered the most cases, not only at the state level but also in the country.
The most common problems in these cases are domestic violence and sexual crimes.
Therefore, having this justice center is very important because it would offer specialized help and allow people to find legal support in one place.
However, due to construction delays, these services are still not available to those who need them.
What will happen to the Women’s Justice Center in Cabo San Lucas?
Despite the delays, authorities assure that progress is continuing, but they have not yet given an estimated date.
This center, which cost more than 13.8 million pesos, will have 580 square meters and will offer services such as legal counseling, psychological care, and the reception of complaints.
It was planned precisely to bring legal and support services closer to the women living in that area, since the center in San José del Cabo was far away for many of them.
Let us remember that the year 2024 brought alarming figures of sexual and domestic violence in Baja California Sur, especially in Los Cabos, where this problem is most prevalent.
