Violence is on the rise in BCS; organized crime is on the rise.

According to the most recent Crime Stoplight report, during the month of April 2025, 7 homicides, 17 cases of extortion, and 75 incidents related to drug dealing were recorded in Baja California Sur. The figures show a 6.45% increase compared to the same month last year, when 88 cases of drug dealing, one homicide, and four extortions were recorded.

This increase in violence occurs in a context of growing public concern, accentuated by recent events such as the confrontation that occurred last Sunday, May 18, in the fishing community of Puerto San Carlos, Comondú municipality. The death toll was six people dead and one injured after a clash between an armed group and members of a private security company from Baja California.

According to Antonio López Rodríguez, head of the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE), the investigation continues and possible perpetrators have been identified: “So far, there are no arrests, but we have lines of investigation and have identified individuals who participated in the events,” he stated.

The private security company involved had the corresponding weapons permits issued by the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), in compliance with the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives.

Statistics from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) indicate that 22 homicides have been recorded so far in 2025, compared to 51 in all of 2024 and 19 in 2023, revealing a worrying fluctuation in the levels of lethal violence in the state.

In response to this situation, the Secretary General of the Government, Saúl González, stated that the State has intensified security operations in coordination with the three levels of government: “Operations are being deployed throughout the state with the support of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, which is also an important issue for the State,” he indicated.

Despite these actions, the recent violent incidents reflect the persistent presence of organized crime in certain areas of the state and the urgent need to strengthen public security strategies. The community of Puerto San Carlos, located on the west coast of the municipality of Comondú, 57 kilometers from Ciudad Constitución, has become a new focus of attention for the authorities.
