On Wednesday, September 3, members of the Antorcha Campesina Movement will begin a sit-in in front of the state government office in Cabo San Lucas, to demand that the housing needs of more than 4,300 families in the municipalities of Los Cabos and La Paz be addressed.

The leader of the Antorcha Campesina Movement, Ricardo Andrés Madrigal, reported that since the beginning of the current state administration, petitions have been submitted related to housing needs, land, materials packages, support for the Moctezuma High School in the Gastélum neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas, as well as food aid, so progress has been made in some cases, but not in others.

He mentioned that in the area of housing, the heads of the State Government General Secretariat, Homero Davis and Saúl González, have addressed them and promised to help them, but to date, progress has been slow.

He stated that as an organization, they are responding to the families’ demands within the framework of their rights under the Constitution, and while they have been very measured and prudent, the time has come, after all the roundtable discussions, to demand that the authorities be more serious about fulfilling their commitments.

He recalled that a few days ago they demonstrated at the state representations of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, but the only thing they achieved was a new roundtable discussion for September 11th, when what they are seeking are concrete results with the commitments made by the General Secretariat of Government.

He noted that two months ago, a document was signed by the state government for the delivery of 1,000 lots in Cabo San Lucas, but so far, they have not heard anything about it.

He said they applaud the federal government’s initiative to boost the construction of affordable housing in Cabo San Lucas, but so far they have completed 700 of the thousands needed, and “in that sense, we can’t wait to see if it’s completed during the president’s six-year term, if there will truly be support for families.”

He specified that, aware of the housing problems in the state, the Antorcha Campesina Movement has three demands for land from the government: 3,500 lots in Cabo San Lucas, 400 in San José del Cabo, and 400 in La Paz.

He clarified that they are not asking for anything free, but rather a “little push” so that people have a little piece of their homeland, 200 square meters or even 160 to begin building their homes, in an area with basic services.

He stated that this Wednesday they will hold a march in Cabo San Lucas and a protest will be set up in front of the state government representative offices there.
