The state of Baja California Sur is practically an island, surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, and depends heavily on maritime freight transport and trade with the rest of the country and the world.

The Comprehensive Port Administration (API) manages six ports and two maritime terminals, including the Port of Pichilingue, through which 80% of the supplies needed by the population and tourism of Baja California Sur enter.

This port, located in the municipality of La Paz, has a berth of 1,471 m, a 2,500 m navigation channel, a 350 m long berth, and a 10.5 m interior low tide zone with capacity for ferries of up to 24,964 gross registered tons and bulk carriers and cruise ships of up to 113,561 gross registered tons.

Its main routes are the ports of Mazatlán and Topolobampo, Sinaloa; Guaymas, Sonora; Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán; Ensenada, Baja California; and San Diego, California, United States. From January to August 2025, the following were recorded through its docks and terminals:

8 yacht arrivals with 2,540 tons

3 rod arrivals with 17,423 tons

20 LP gas arrivals with 27,040 tons

31 cement arrivals with 230,692 tons

504 general cargo arrivals with 2,748,866 tons

504 ferry arrivals with 117,541 passengers

20 cruise ship arrivals with 70,675 passengers

During the period, 1,176,560 tons of products were unloaded, including dairy products, cement, groceries, beer, fruits and vegetables, packaging, perishables, steel, construction materials, soft drinks, meat, gypsum, and fertilizers.

And 326,729 tons of products such as sardines, salt, potatoes, tomatoes, scrap metal, containers, oranges, pallets, fishmeal, cardboard, baskets, water, and chili peppers were shipped.

At the Pemex terminal, 112 arrivals were recorded with 877,051 tons of fuel; at the fiscal pier, 16 ecotourism vessel arrivals with 1,772 passengers; and at the San Juan de la Costa terminal, 7 arrivals were recorded with 226,752 tons of phosphorite.

At Puerto San Carlos, 441 arrivals were recorded with 48,939 tons of seafood, and at the ecotourism pier, 17 ecotourism vessel arrivals were recorded with 2,067 passengers.

In Loreto, seven cruise ship arrivals were recorded with 13,255 passengers, and in Puerto Escondido, two ecotourism vessel arrivals were recorded with 50 passengers.

In Santa Rosalía, 117 arrivals were recorded with 2,507 tons of general cargo, four ecotourism vessel arrivals were recorded at the multipurpose dock with 377 tons, and 25 arrivals were recorded at the COMSA terminal with 862,265 tons of bulk gypsum.

In 2024, the Port of Pichilingue handled 2,252,486 tons of products, of which 1,801,025 were unloaded and 451,461 were loaded.
