The municipality of La Paz is positioned as one of Mexico’s most attractive tourist destinations, offering unique activities ranging from whale shark watching to world-class water sports. The city seeks to establish itself as the country’s number one boutique destination, leveraging its natural resources and implementing new regulations that regulate its public spaces.
It’s worth noting that a boutique tourist destination is a city, region, or location that offers an exclusive, personalized, and limited-scale travel experience, focused on quality and attention to detail rather than visitor numbers. Unlike mass destinations, which prioritize tourist numbers, a boutique destination seeks to attract travelers who value specialized service, cultural authenticity, and well-preserved environments.
This was stated by Agustín Olachea, president of the La Paz Association of Hotel and Tourism Companies (Emprhotur), who explained that the sector will register positive figures for 2025, with cumulative growth of 5% to 6% as of August compared to the previous year.
“Compared to last year, as of August, we are about 5 or 6% up on the previous year. Last year was also good, and this year has been quite favorable. Not only has hotel occupancy improved, but so has the average nightly rate. We’ve also seen an increase of over 25%, and that’s great because we have hotel rooms that provide more resources,” Olachea said.
He indicated that the increase in hotel rates represents a significant economic benefit for La Paz, considering that tourism is the city’s main economic activity. The data reflects that visitors are willing to pay higher prices for the experience offered by the Southern California destination. This positive trend coincides with the international recognition La Paz has earned in national and international markets.
The business leader emphasized that the winter season presents special opportunities for tourists, especially those from regions with cold climates. The city maintains favorable weather conditions 365 days a year, allowing it to receive visitors at any time of year.
“Enjoy the sea year-round. Foreigners from colder regions really enjoy our destination from late October and early November through May. And domestic tourists love to come during Holy Week and summer,” explained the president of Emprhotur.
International tourists’ preference for the months of October through May is due to the milder weather conditions and the abundant seasonal activities. During this period, temperatures drop compared to summer, creating a more comfortable environment for outdoor activities and exploring the region’s natural attractions.
Olachea detailed the many options the winter season offers for visitors, highlighting the diversity of experiences available.
“From October to April, whale shark watching comes, and whale shark watching is a worldwide phenomenon. Then, as summer approaches, the ban or restriction on swimming with sea lions is lifted, and there’s an opportunity to swim with sea lions starting in, I think, September and October. When you come in winter, when the northerly winds are present, we have one of the three best spots for windsurfing in La Ventana and El Sargento, which is world-class,” he explained.
Sport fishing is at its best during September and October, when species like dorado and marlin are at their most active. Tour operators report excellent catches during these months, consolidating La Paz as a preferred destination for both domestic and international sport fishermen.
Marine wildlife sightings diversify considerably during the winter season. The waters of the Sea of Cortez become a stage for observing orcas, turtles, dolphins, sea lions, giant manta rays, and mobulas. This marine biodiversity, combined with the proximity of Isla Espíritu Santo and other formations, creates a unique ecosystem that allows for wildlife observation experiences.
