From December 10th to 14th, the city of Los Cabos will host the thirteenth edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival. In an exclusive interview, its general director, Paola Desentis, acknowledged that this year the festival is reaping the rewards of the work it has done over the past twelve years to solidify Baja California Sur as an emerging creative hub.

“The creative industries have consolidated themselves internationally this decade, thanks to digitalization. So, as a film festival, we set out to create a top-tier program,” she emphasized.

The Sea of Cortez, the desert, and creativity through music, animation, and gastronomy, Desentis assured, will accompany the various screenings, which will range from short films to feature films and documentaries.

“In our program, we’re including an important narrative; #BeyondTheScreen was born from the idea that people see the Los Cabos International Film Festival (FIC Los Cabos) as an event where they’ll see that we live up to our reputation as one of the best national film festivals in a setting like Baja California Sur.”

For the festival director, Los Cabos is the star attraction every year, and she reaffirms that this will continue. From Cabo Pulmo, a symphony orchestra that uses the sounds of whales, and a documentary about swimming with orcas recently regulated in La Ventana, are just some of the topics Desentis mentioned exclusively to El Sudcaliforniano that will be featured in the program.

FIC Los Cabos doesn’t just want to offer a screening experience outside of movie theaters; the message of teaching each viewer how to navigate and care for the rich biodiversity of the peninsula is key. It’s important to mention that Baja California Sur is the state in the country with the longest coastline (access to the sea) at 2,131 km².

With just under a month to go before the start of the Los Cabos International Film Festival (FIC Los Cabos), Paola Desentis also mentioned that this 13th edition will feature the new administration of La Baja Inspira, the fundraising efforts for the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, which supports young Mexican talent in the film industry, and a tribute to Eugenio Caballero, director and winner of the 2007 Academy Award for Best Production Design for Pan’s Labyrinth. These events will also be part of the program, which begins next Wednesday, December 10.

Twelve years ago, when Paola Desentis worked in the creative industries area at the Ministry of Economy, she stated that animation, video games, and even Artificial Intelligence were already being discussed as new audiovisual languages that transcend borders, cultures, and languages.

“Today, the intersection of creative industries and technology hubs like Hollywood and Silicon Valley, which are relatively close to Los Cabos, makes us a festival that responds to these trends. The geographic location of Baja California Sur is key to this festival and cannot be compared to any other Mexican film festival.”

Tickets are now available at a special presale price at www.ficloscabos.org, and more details about the program will be released in the coming weeks. Desentis revealed that, in addition to various screenings of emerging Mexican filmmakers, there will be a special Depeche Mode screening.
