In the midst of Spring Break season in Los Cabos, transportation operators reported that state inspectors blocked the entry of private vehicles seeking to provide tourist transportation services to young people staying at the Riu Santa Fe Hotel.
The complaint was made by Robbin Hernández, president of the Association of Professionals and Business Leaders of Los Cabos, who explained that the vehicles already had pre-arranged services to transport tourists staying at the resort.
The situation forced several spring breakers in Los Cabos to find alternative transportation outside the hotel to reach their recreational activities.
The business representative stated that state authorities must recognize the importance of properly training transportation inspectors, as these types of situations negatively impact tourist transportation operations in Los Cabos and create a negative image of the tourist destination.
“It’s unacceptable that we lack coordination after all the meetings we’ve held and that we’re still having these problems. As you can see, young people are taking transportation right outside the hotel; this isn’t Los Cabos. If the staff isn’t trained or prepared, then they need to be replaced or something needs to be done,” he stated.
Hernández reiterated that, despite previous meetings between authorities and representatives of the business sector, the same problems persist with tourist transportation operations during Spring Break in Los Cabos, one of the peak tourist seasons.
To date, Baja California Sur government authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident or the potential impact this situation could have on the tourist destination.
According to figures from the Los Cabos Hotel Association, hotel occupancy in Los Cabos is projected to reach 81% in March, with an estimated 50,000 spring breakers arriving, who could generate an economic impact exceeding $50 million for the destination.
