The Secretariat of the Navy announced that it has completed the regularization of the Port of Loreto, Baja California Sur, granting it the status of a Deep-Sea Port. They affirmed that this action serves to administratively and regulatory strengthen the National Port System.
Since 2006, the Port of Loreto had been operating under irregular conditions, as it received vessels engaged in deep-sea navigation despite being authorized solely as a cabotage port. This regularization will allow for the official regulation of the port’s operations—effected through a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on April 10—thereby providing legal certainty to this regularization process.
On May 20, 2024, the Directorate General of the State Comprehensive Port Administration (API BCS) requested that the Navy regularize the Port of Loreto as a Deep-Sea Port, with the aim of boosting the region’s economic development.
Furthermore, the Secretariat of the Navy detailed that the official designation as a Deep-Sea Port constitutes an administrative act that formalizes the port’s current operations and ensures compliance with applicable national and international regulations. Consequently, three meetings were held to clarify the scope and intent of the decree, successfully establishing lines of action in support of this measure.
