‘They’re after Los Chapitos’: This is what we know about the operations in Los Cabos

Recent actions by federal forces in Baja California Sur are aimed at a specific objective: weakening the structure of Los Chapitos in one of the territories that for years was considered a strategic refuge for this faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The operations deployed in Los Cabos have resulted in armed confrontations, raids, seizures, and arrests, reflecting a new phase of pressure on the criminal group.

Since the end of May, members of the National Defense Secretariat, the Navy Secretariat, the National Guard, and state agencies have carried out a series of operations in San José del Cabo, where they seized high-powered weapons, explosives, stolen vehicles, tactical equipment, and suspected safe houses used by members of the organization.

According to information published by the weekly newspaper ZETA Tijuana, a federal intelligence source confirmed that the federal government’s instruction is to pressure and dismantle the operations of Los Chapitos in Baja California Sur, particularly in San José del Cabo.

The same source maintained that the region was considered an economic and territorial stronghold of the faction led by the sons of Joaquín Guzmán Loera.

The operations began after citizen reports of armed men in Santa Anita, where a confrontation between the military and armed civilians later took place. In the following days, further operations were carried out in various parts of San José del Cabo, including the Monterreal neighborhood and the area known as La Ballena.

Authorities reported the arrest of suspected instigators of violence, the seizure of more than a dozen long guns, grenade launcher ammunition, bulletproof vests, and more than a hundred improvised explosive devices. Properties allegedly used for criminal activities were also located.

Who are the sons of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán who remain at large?

Los Chapitos are a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel made up of the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Following the capture and extradition of Ovidio Guzmán López, as well as the voluntary surrender to the U.S. of Joaquín Guzmán López in 2024, Mexican and U.S. authorities continue to prioritize Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, identified as operational leaders of the organization.

Both are identified by security agencies as key figures within the criminal structure that maintains a presence in various regions of the country.

In recent months, reports have surfaced regarding a possible negotiation between U.S. authorities and Los Chapitos, Iván Archivaldo and Alfredo Guzmán, who remain at large.

The information was published in the Los Angeles Times. To date, authorities from both countries have not publicly announced any agreements.

Security operations continue in regions historically considered areas of influence for the Los Chapitos faction.
