The State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) acknowledged that it requires a larger budget, more personnel, and additional infrastructure to strengthen investigations and the handling of cases involving missing persons in Baja California Sur.
Prosecutor Antonio López Rodríguez said that the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Missing Persons is currently undergoing a strengthening process and acknowledged that its current capabilities must be expanded in order to follow up on investigation files and conduct searches.
“Of course, much more is required; a larger budget is needed, more personnel are needed, and greater infrastructure is needed to address these types of situations,” he stated.
The acknowledgment comes amid an increase in cases that, according to the head of the PGJE, has also reached the northern area of Baja California Sur, forcing the expansion of the units responsible for these investigations.
PGJE expands units in response to missing-person cases in northern BCS
López Rodríguez explained that previously, investigation files involving missing persons were handled primarily from La Paz and Los Cabos. However, he noted that during the past year, cases increased in municipalities in the northern part of the state.
In response to this situation, the Attorney General’s Office began expanding its capacity to provide assistance beyond the two main cities of Baja California Sur.
Currently, the institution is working to strengthen investigation units in Loreto, Vizcaíno, and Santa Rosalía, with the aim of having personnel who can handle cases directly in those areas and maintain closer contact with families.
The prosecutor indicated that strengthening the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office includes increasing personnel, facilities, and vehicles, resources that are necessary both for investigations and for work related to searching for missing persons.

The head of the PGJE maintained that addressing the problem should not fall solely on the Attorney General’s Office. He considered that security institutions must also intervene through preventive measures to reduce the incidence of these crimes.
“Direct action is also required, not only from the Attorney General’s Office, but from all security institutions to prevent these types of crimes,” he stated.
The PGJE therefore faces the challenge of expanding its operational capacity while continuing to handle ongoing investigations and searches for missing persons in different parts of Baja California Sur.
