Profeco is already working on the issue of “illegally” charging for hand luggage and misleading advertising by airlines.
The head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco), Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, assured that the agency under his charge is already working on the issue of airlines that charge hand luggage and is looking at penalties and or fines “because it is illegal.”
“For about 60, 90 days, all airlines unilaterally and illegally decided that the basic rate does not include your hand luggage when the law specifically indicates it, and we have judicial resolutions in Profeco that support it,” he said on Thursday.

Sheffield Padilla stated that the airlines only want us to “carry a bag or a briefcase, which fits under the seat, not in the luggage rack, under the seat. What is happening, they are going wrong, that is what is happening.

“In general, the airlines in Mexico are directing their advertising to make you believe that they are cheap, not being cheap, but only making you believe that they are cheap, that is why the misleading advertising of Viva Aerobus, that we are treating it legally.”
“They cannot tell you that for 39 pesos or for one peso you are going to fly, that is not true, although in their computer system, on their page, they say that the basic rate is one peso or 39 pesos.
