An anonymous complaint reveals a clandestine grave with 113 human remains in Los Cabos

The authorities of Baja California Sur have located more than a hundred bone fragments on a road in the tourist region. In the State there are 950 missing people

Collectives and authorities work in a clandestine grave located in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, on February 25.

On a dirt road in Los Cabos, the Search Commission of Baja California Sur has found a clandestine grave. So far they have found 113 remains and bone fragments; until the identifications are made, it will not be known how many people they belong to. An anonymous call revealed the location of a property with bodies between Miraflores and the town of Agua Caliente, where the excavations continue. In the State there are 952 missing people, according to the national registry of the Ministry of the Interior. The finding opens a gap in the security of this popular tourist destination in Mexico.

On February 21, the authorities and the collectives of search for missing persons arrived at this point near the mountain range, thanks to an anonymous notice. In the first study of the area, 46 human remains appeared, “for which it was established to expand the exploration area, thus starting with a generalized search”, the Ministry of the Interior of Baja California Sur has pointed out. On the second day of work they located the grave, where there were 67 more remains. The place has been guarded by the federal Defense Secretariat and the National Guard, while the search in the area, also with dogs from the Prosecutor’s Office, continues.

Mexico has become a territory of clandestine graves. From 2006 to mid-2023, there are more than 5,600. The organized crime uses disappearance as a war tactic, an added obstacle for families to achieve justice. In January it was a network of graves in Sonora; last week the discovery of 11 bodies in Tarímbaro, Michoacán, this Monday it was the turn of Los Cabos.

Baja California Sur has historically been one of the territories that seemed far from the violence against drug trafficking suffered by the northern states, the Gulf of Mexico or entities such as Michoacán or Guerrero, where the struggle between criminal groups plunged the population into terror. Los Cabos, led by Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, have consolidated as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Now, just 70 kilometers from one of the favorite corners of international travelers, the earth returns more than a hundred human remains.

In the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the finding of this type of graves in Baja California has skyrocketed. If from 2006 to 2018 there were 31 – eight in Los Cabos – since December 1, 2018 until April 2023 there are already 74, of which 29 have been located in Los Cabos, which stands as the area with the highest number of these clandestine burials.
