The coastal road to Cabo del Este has become one of the most uncertain issues since the approval of the Urban Development Plan (PDU) at the beginning of the year, which classified a 3.9-kilometer stretch as “unused.” The decision sparked various citizen expressions of disagreement, and even the governor of Baja California Sur, Victor Castro, stated that the alleged dispossession of the people would not be allowed. Recently, the Los Cabos City Council reiterated that beach access would be guaranteed.
The eighth council member from the National Action Party (PAN), Celestino Atienzo, asserted that private sector developers have taken charge of maintaining the infrastructure and access to coastal roads in good condition, where they also risk their capital to spur development. Therefore, he maintained that there is a commitment to the construction of beach parks.
According to the council member, these parks must have parking, restrooms, showers, and other infrastructure that facilitates the enjoyment of the beaches in these areas. He also emphasized that beach access will not be withdrawn, but rather the opposite.
So far, the issue of the coastal road to the East Cape has been put on hold; among the latest details about what would happen, according to the mayor of Los Cabos, there would be a “reconsideration.” It should be noted that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on the state government to review the issue.
