With an average current monetary expenditure of 55,939 pesos per quarter, Baja California Sur households ranked fifth nationally in 2024, according to INEGI’s National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH). This amount represents a real increase of 5.0% compared to 2022, although below the national average growth (7.9%).
The largest share of spending in Baja California Sur falls on food, beverages, and tobacco, which represent 33.2% of the total, with an average quarterly expenditure of 18,559 pesos per household. Transportation and communications are next in line, absorbing 12,785 pesos (22.9%). Together, these two items account for more than half of the household budget.
Of the food expenditures—which amount to 18,559 pesos per quarter per household—14,006 pesos are spent on purchases for cooking at home. Within this category, meat tops the list at 2,702 pesos, followed by cereals (1,990) and a category of other miscellaneous foods (2,333), which includes canned, preserved, and prepared foods. Together, these three groups account for almost half of the household food budget.
Spending on beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) reached 1,753 pesos, while dairy products totaled 1,261 pesos and vegetables, legumes, and seeds 1,299 pesos, a category that, however, decreased 4.6% compared to 2022. In contrast, spending on coffee, tea, and chocolate (+22.5%), spices and dressings (+36.7%), and eggs (+15.9%) showed the largest increases.
Outside the home, South Californian families spend 4,412 pesos each quarter on food and beverages—24% of the total spent on food—while tobacco consumption amounts to 140 pesos, with a 39.3% increase in two years.
Other significant items included housing and basic services (energy, water, and gas), with 6,230 pesos (11.1%), and personal care and miscellaneous items, with 4,493 pesos (8.0%). Families also spent 4,337 pesos on education and recreation (7.8%), 3,525 on cleaning supplies and household goods (6.3%), 2,685 on transfers and miscellaneous expenses (4.8%), 1,892 on clothing and footwear (3.4%), and 1,433 pesos on healthcare (2.6%).
Most Significant Increases: Health, Care, and Household Items
Although food and transportation dominate in absolute terms, the largest increases between 2022 and 2024 were recorded in specific areas: spending on health grew 28.5%, personal care grew 16.4%, and household goods grew 10.1%. Increases were also observed in transfers (+7.3%) and food (+5.2%).
In contrast, spending on education and recreation decreased 5.3%, while housing and services decreased 3.0%, and spending on clothing and footwear fell 1.4%.
Larger Households and Multiple Earners
The 2024 ENIGH survey collected data from 3,275 households in Baja California Sur, of which 2,124 were urban and 1,151 were rural. The average household in the state consists of 3.14 people, with 2.14 income earners and 1.64 employed members.

At the national level, the average quarterly household expenditure was 47,674 pesos, meaning that households in Baja California Sur spent 17.3% more than the national average. Although the growth rate was slower than other states, Baja California Sur remains among the five states with the greatest spending capacity, along with Querétaro, Mexico City, Nuevo León, and Jalisco.
These results provide a detailed overview of the priorities and economic pressures of households in the state and constitute a key tool for designing public policies and sectoral strategies based on actual consumption behavior.
