What you need to know:

Although this new activity is already legal… you do have to comply with some rules and obtain permits to do it.

Tourism in Mexico is about to change… or at least in Baja California Sur, as in an unprecedented move, SEMARNAT (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) approved swimming with orcas.

A somewhat controversial decision, considering that just a few months ago the Senate banned the use of marine mammals in shows.

SEMARNAT Approves Swimming with Orcas in Baja California Sur
Yes, you read that right. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) announced that swimming with orcas will now be legal in Baja California Sur… all as part of its plan to regulate tourism.

The “Standard Management Plan” (PMT) was issued for the conservation and non-extractive use of the Orcinus orca (Orca) species through observation and swimming, in La Ventana, Baja California Sur.

Orcas, classified as “Subject to Special Protection,” have been affected in recent years by the increase in tourism and changes in their marine habitat.

Where will this activity be possible?

In the statement, authorities revealed that the area designated for this activity is located between five coastal towns.

The area is located between El Sargento, La Ventana, Agua Amarga, Ejido General Juan Domínguez Cota, and Los Planes.

What are the rules?

Of course, although the idea of swimming with orcas sounds great, authorities clarified that certain rules must be followed to participate in this activity:

During the swim, the use of sunscreen or sunscreen; harassing, touching, riding, or harming the orcas in any way; and obstructing their course, whether with boats or swimmers.
The use of motors while swimming near the orcas is prohibited.
The use of flashlights or artificial lighting in the water is prohibited.
Noise-emitting devices such as megaphones, horns, or any other loud noise-producing devices are prohibited.
Dispose of any type of waste.
Feeding the species and using drones to search for orcas is prohibited.
In addition, it was reported that the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection will be in charge of monitoring the area to ensure all rules are followed.
