Los Cabos Convention Center renovation ruled out; social projects will be prioritized

After several years of disuse, the Baja California Sur government announced last year that the Los Cabos International Convention Center would be leased to a private company for 400,000 pesos. However, despite the current contract, state authorities have ruled out any renovation of the building.

The announcement has sparked debate among tourism industry representatives, who believe that reactivating this space is key to strengthening meetings, conventions, and incentive tourism in the destination.

Regarding this possibility, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío stated that Los Cabos does not need another space for large-scale events, as many hotels in the destination have their own convention centers. He also stated that his administration will prioritize social projects such as paving, drainage, and improvements to the drinking water system, rather than investing in the facility.

“Los Cabos is where there are the most convention venues. It’s not a priority for us. Hotels have their permanent convention centers for all types of conventions. I prefer to invest in paving and drainage, which Los Cabos needs so much,” the state governor stated.

Although it was reported that the lease for the Convention Center runs until 2027, and that the company in charge has committed to making infrastructure improvements, no details have been released regarding the use of the funds obtained from the lease.

Furthermore, the lack of transparency regarding the identity of the leasing company, as well as the variation in previously released figures, have raised questions about the management of the property and the use of public funds derived from its operation.
