The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the government of Baja California Sur officially launched the construction and modernization project for the Bahía Asunción-Punta Prieta highway in the municipality of Mulegé.
During the event, the head of SICT, Jesús Esteva Medina, accompanied by the state governor, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, and the mayor of Mulegé, Edith Aguilar Villavicencio, affirmed that with these projects, the government of the Fourth Transformation “is focused on reducing inequality, achieving justice, and helping those most in need; that is our guiding principle when we are building these roads.”
The modernization of this highway will boost connectivity and the social and economic development of northern Baja California Sur, benefiting 5,670 residents. The goal for 2026 is to complete 10.5 kilometers with an investment of 145.56 million pesos.
Works that will boost the local economy
In this first phase, the SICT (Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation) will contribute 95.56 million pesos for improvements to 7 km of road and the construction of four fords, while the state government will allocate 50 million pesos for 3.5 km of road, three fords, and an asphalt surface.
This year, the project will include earthworks, construction of MR-42 concrete fords, complementary works, asphalt paving, and the installation of horizontal and vertical signage.
During this process, the works will boost the local economy by generating 145 direct and 580 indirect jobs.
Furthermore, it will substantially improve connectivity in the North Pacific region of the state and increase the commercial competitiveness of the local fishing sector by streamlining the transport of products to regional markets.
It is worth noting that by 2027, an additional 18.96 kilometers (16.10 km of main line and 2.86 km of branch line) are planned to definitively connect the community of Punta Prieta and consolidate the modernization of this road corridor.
For his part, the Governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, thanked the head of the SICT for his support of the works being carried out in the state and announced the upcoming delivery of two paving trains: “He is going to send two pothole repair trains with all the equipment, one for the north and one for the south. They will begin delivering them, I believe, around August.”
With these actions, the administration of the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reaffirms its commitment to joining efforts to reduce the backlog in communication routes and bring social justice to the most remote communities in the country.
