Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Surprises With Its French Heritage and a Mining Past Still Visible in Its Streets
No one expects to find a work by Gustave Eiffel in a small town in northern Mexico, but this country never stops surprising. That place is Santa Rosalía, a Magical Town in northern Baja California Sur that is home to a beautiful church designed by the same engineer who created the Eiffel Tower. It is also considered the first prefabricated church installed in Mexico.
But that is not its only treasure. Its mining past left behind a landscape with a strong French influence, featuring historic wooden buildings, sheet-metal roofs, and an unmistakable European atmosphere overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Even its cuisine preserves French influences that have survived over time.
Why Does Santa Rosalía Have a French Charm?
To understand why there is a French church in Santa Rosalía, it is important to know a bit about its history. Before bearing its current name, the town was known as Cachanía, after the abundant cachanilla plant native to the region.
Everything changed during the second half of the 19th century, when major copper deposits were discovered and the French mining company El Boleo arrived to exploit them. In 1885, the government of Porfirio Díaz granted the company a 50-year concession. During that time, the company completely transformed the town by building homes, schools, churches, and other structures with a distinctly French architectural style for its engineers, technicians, and workers.
In 1910, the community officially adopted the name Santa Rosalía. However, in 1954, the company ceased operations after the copper deposits were exhausted, causing many residents to leave. Despite this, the town reinvented itself and today preserves 32 historic buildings, many of them representative of the French architectural style known as Bolerian.
The Gustave Eiffel Church That Arrived in Baja California Sur
Among all of these historic buildings, Santa Bárbara Church is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Santa Rosalía. It is a prefabricated iron structure designed by the famous French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower.
The church was entirely manufactured in Europe using galvanized iron sheets and components and was displayed at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition as part of an architectural trend that produced dismantlable buildings for transportation and installation around the world.
Later, the El Boleo mining company purchased the structure, shipped it by sea to Baja California Sur in pieces, and assembled it in Santa Rosalía, where it was inaugurated in 1895. For this reason, it is recognized as the first prefabricated church installed in Mexico.
More Historic Treasures of Santa Rosalía
Santa Bárbara Church is only the beginning. Another must-visit site is the Historic Mining Museum, located in what were once the offices of the El Boleo mining company. This beautiful wooden building, constructed between 1885 and 1900, houses mining machinery, blueprints, period furniture, laboratory equipment, and photographs that tell the story of the town’s industrial past.
Outside the museum, visitors can still see “El Trenecito,” one of the original mining locomotives.
Another important landmark is the Old Mineral Smelter, where the massive industrial structures and chimneys once used to process copper still remain.
Just a few minutes away stands the French Hotel, a 19th-century wooden building that has preserved its original structure and continues to welcome guests.
To better appreciate the French influence, visitors can also explore the neighborhood known as Mesa Francia, where the mining company’s engineers and officials once lived.
French Flavors That Are Still Baked in Santa Rosalía
The French legacy of Santa Rosalía can also be experienced through its food. A mandatory stop is El Boleo Bakery, which has been operating since 1901. It continues to prepare bread using traditional recipes and French baking techniques in stone ovens.
Its egg bread, baguettes, teleras, and pastries are famous throughout the Baja California Peninsula.
To finish the day, there is nothing better than walking along the waterfront while watching the sunset over the Sea of Cortez. Santa Rosalía is known for its peaceful coastline and spectacular sunsets.
There is no need to travel all the way to Paris to admire a work by Gustave Eiffel—you only need to visit Santa Rosalía.
