LA PAZ, Baja California Sur — More than 1,200 products crafted by 190 local producers now carry the official “Hecho en Baja California Sur” (Made in Baja California Sur) distinction, offering regional identity and quality certification to goods manufactured entirely within the state.
The initiative, spearheaded by the State Secretariat of Tourism and Economy (SETUES), aims to highlight regional craftsmanship while connecting local artisans directly with the booming hospitality and tourism sectors in major destinations such as Los Cabos and La Paz.
Undersecretary of Economy Alonso Gutiérrez Martínez explained that the certification process extends far beyond a simple label. “The distinction is not only a recognition of local goods, but also a way to assess what producers need to improve,” Gutiérrez Martínez noted. The state government offers comprehensive support, delivering over 2,000 training sessions ranging from basic financial literacy to business management diplomas through partnerships with various institutions.
A recent hotel expo in Los Cabos featured a dedicated “Hecho en Baja California Sur” pavilion, allowing local vendors to showcase artisanal foods, beverages, and crafts directly to hotel purchasing directors seeking high-quality local inventory. Additionally, business match-making events organized by SETUES have brought together dozens of producers and commercial buyers to foster regional supply chains.
To obtain the distinction, local entrepreneurs submit a simple application through the SETUES website or at the Undersecretariat of Economy offices in La Paz. State inspectors conduct physical verification visits to confirm that goods are manufactured locally rather than imported from other states or countries. Once verified, qualifying products receive approval within 15 business days and are integrated into an official online consumer catalog, promoting sustainable local economic development across Baja California Sur.
