A Hispanic couple from Richmond, California, lost their lives in a tragic car accident while they were heading to Los Cabos to celebrate the wife’s birthday. The accident was caused by a driver in an alleged state of drunkenness on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad.
RICHMOND, CA.- A Hispanic couple from the Bay Area died in a car accident when they were heading to spend a few days of rest in Los Cabos.
José Lozano and Luz Durán Ríos, residents of Richmond, California, died on Saturday, January 13, in Carlsbad around 4 am on Interstate 5, near Palomar Airport Road.
The accident was allegedly caused by a driver who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
The couple, who planned to celebrate Luz’s birthday in Cabo San Lucas, died in a three-car crash.
Their relatives remember José and Luz as a happy couple, always smiling and dancing together.
Eric Lozano, José’s son, said on GoFundme that the couple leaves behind 6 children and 8 grandchildren.
Local media identified the driver as Angela Hays, a resident of the city of Corona, who was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).
“On January 13, around 4:30 in the morning, my father and his beloved wife Luz Durán Ríos were tragically killed by a drunk driver while they were heading to Los Cabos, Mexico,” Eric said.
The woman was allegedly driving a gray Hyundai that crashed into a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, which in turn was hit by a white Nissan Altima.
José and Luz were traveling in the Cherokee truck, while the driver of the Nissan survived the accident, although he was injured.
The arrested driver did not suffer serious injuries from this accident.
“We are raising funds to help transport them from San Diego back to Richmond, California and for their funeral. We know that everyone who knew them loved them very much and will be happy to contribute, but do not feel obligated if that will create any difficulty for you,” he added.
Lozano said that what is left of the funds raised will be donated to an organization that raises awareness about driving under the influence of alcohol.
