Rosarito… in six hours

Las playas de Rosarito destacan por su tranquilidad y limpieza.

They say that when the first European navigators arrived at the western end of the American Continent, they found a huge body of water whose size they did not know, but which did not present the wildness of the Atlantic.

For this very reason they called it the Pacific. And they were not wrong: it is enough to see a sunset bathed by the waves of this gentle giant of water to realize that the name was given with all honor.

What can I visit in Comala in six hours?

What to see in Morelia in six hours?

What can I see in the Guadalupe Valley in six hours?

Rosarito is, perhaps, among all the beaches of the Pacific, one of the calmest. Despite its cold waters, the sunrise is always calm, like a kind of continuous lullaby that inserts itself into the soul.

Its violet sunsets make the mind fly and travel through other worlds, only to return and land on its exuberant gastronomy, led by the lobster of Puerto Nuevo, a fisherman’s dish that sums up the luxury of the region.

01:00 Rosarito Beach Hotel

It may seem like a strange choice to start a trip in a hotel, but this space is essential to understand the history of the place and how Hollywood was essential in its development.

In fact, thanks to its proximity to the Mecca of Cinema, Rosarito became one of the favorite destinations of stars like Rita Hayworth, who whenever she wanted a break from fame would arrive at the hotel in her big car.

This particular space is characterized by its large hall, unchanged since the 1930s, where you can appreciate original Mexican art that includes works brought from Yucatan and samples of local artists.

Its sumptuous restaurants, full of stories, as well as its beach parties, open to the public and where you can listen to the best of Mexican music, make it a fun option to start the tour.

01:00 State Center for the Arts

One of the unique characteristics of Rosarito is its vibrant artistic life, driven by creators from different parts of the world, mostly from the United States, as well as by a large community from the interior of the country.

Although there are dozens of gallery workshops where you can interact directly with artists and learn about their creative processes, the State Center for the Arts in Rosarito is where the proposals converge and you can take advantage of it to put together your agenda.

Located just a few minutes from Rosarito’s central beach, this enormous space offers a unique showcase for creators from the region, who offer their creations at events such as Art Walk, one of the most famous art fairs on the Peninsula.

In its exhibition spaces you will not only find painting or sculpture by Baja Californian creators: they also offer dance, music, film, literature and workshops to promote local talent.

02:00 Puerto Nuevo

Two seemingly contradictory events came together to create one of Rosarito’s most famous towns, an honor that it owes to a specific dish eaten by the area’s fishermen: Rosarito lobster.

The dish, made up of large flour tortillas, black beans, rice and a generous portion of lobster seasoned with butter, was what the workers of this small fishing town kept for themselves, beneath a huge sign promoting New Port cigarettes… hence its name, Puerto Nuevo.

Legend has it that one of the most popular cycling routes in the region, the Tijuana-Ensenada, passed right next to the small fishing town, where athletes sought to replenish their energy. The solitude of the road was interrupted by small towns like Puerto Nuevo, where its inhabitants offered them what they had… and the rest is history.

Today, behind its colonial-style arch, there are at least a dozen restaurants offering this Mexican delicacy. You can listen to music or simply enjoy the sounds of nature, eating lobster and drinking wine like any fisherman.

02:00 Cantamar Beach

Rosarito stands out for being an ideal destination for those who like nature. And if Punta Mezquite is the dream place for surf lovers, the golden sand beaches are great for those who want to relax.

One of the most popular is Cantamar. It is a thick strip of sand, with enough space to relax under an umbrella and contemplate the horizon, while you enjoy a beer or the shrimp skewers, typical of the region.

For lovers of extreme sports, there is nothing like exploring the dunes in 4×4 vehicles or taking a horseback ride in a wide, safe area.

If you want to try surfing, this is an ideal place, as there are board rental sites, where expert instructors will take you by the hand if it is your first time trying to tame the waves of the sea.
