On the morning of Monday, July 15, a closing ceremony at the Luis Donaldo Colosio High School, located in Ciudad Constitución, Comondú, was interrupted by gunfire just a few meters from the school, sparking panic among students, teachers, and parents in Baja California Sur.

The events occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. Witnesses also reported that, while the end-of-year celebrations were taking place in the schoolyard, gunshots began to be heard nearby. Videos posted on social media show dozens of people lying on the ground, while a voice on a loudspeaker urged people not to get up and remain calm:

“Everyone on the floor, please. Don’t get up… calm down. We’re still the same,” one of the event organizers was heard saying.

Body Found Near School

Later, authorities from the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) confirmed the discovery of a dead man with gunshot wounds on Isla Coronado Street, which is very close to the school campus. The victim was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for an autopsy and to begin an investigation into intentional homicide.

Although no arrests have been reported, the PGJE and the Comondú Municipal Police have launched operations in the area to try to locate those responsible. According to preliminary reports, the shooting was part of a score-settling between armed civilians, a situation that, however, put minors and teachers at risk.

The State SEP Reacts: Closures Will Continue with Security Support

In a press conference, the State Secretary of Public Education, Alicia Meza Osuna, described the events as “regrettable and concerning,” although she clarified that the cancellation of school end-of-year events is not planned.

“Schools remain safe spaces. We will continue with the closures, but in sensitive areas, protocols will be reinforced and security forces will be present,” the official stated.

Meza Osuna indicated that the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and the National Guard (GN) will join the surveillance of educational centers in Comondú to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Comondú: Hotbed of Violence in Baja California Sur

The municipality of Comondú has seen an upsurge in violent incidents in recent months. Between June and July 2025 alone, local media have documented at least five violent homicides, some of them involving high-caliber weapons.

Although Baja California Sur maintains a low homicide rate compared to other states in the country, the Comondú case has raised alarm.

Civil organizations and parent groups have demanded that state and federal authorities implement a comprehensive school security plan, fearing that organized crime will continue to expand its presence in public and educational spaces.
