An unusual find has captured the attention of Baja California Sur after two injured oarfish appeared. This species normally lives in the depths of the ocean, between 200 and 1,000 meters, and is rarely seen by humans.
The discovery was made by scientist René Villanueva, who noticed the specimens a few meters from the beach. They had serious injuries, apparently caused by a shark attack. Marine biologist Fernanda Raygoza also participated in the recording, documenting the fish’s physical characteristics: long bodies, platinum-blue tones, and reddish fins.
Despite efforts to rescue them, both fish died shortly afterward. However, their discovery represents a unique opportunity for science, as the oarfish (Regalecus glesne) remains an enigma due to the depths at which it lives. Specialists began detailed measurements and records for future research.
The Oarfish and Its Relationship with Earthquakes
The appearance of this species often sparks popular beliefs, as in some cultures it is associated with the possible arrival of earthquakes or seismic activity. Although this superstition is known in several coastal regions, there is no scientific evidence to confirm a relationship between oarfish and earthquakes. Even so, their presence in shallow waters continues to generate wonder and curiosity.
