In a recent interview with the media, the president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) of Los Cabos announced that the summer season has seen a decrease in occupancy at establishments offering food services in the municipality.
Oscar Morando Villa, a local representative of this organization, explained that historically, summer is one of the seasons with the lowest occupancy of the year, compared to the last quarter of the year, when tourism is high, especially from international visitors.
However, he acknowledged that various criminal or security-related incidents throughout the state have had an impact on the population and local businesses.
“It’s an issue that is also related to the low season, where tourism is declining… Yes, there are problems that we can’t ignore, but the authorities are acting from their positions, and we are doing the same, maintaining our standards of quality of service, which is the only thing that can help the restaurant sector move forward,” Morando stated.
They estimate that the reduction in recent weeks has been as high as 30% across various establishments.
It is important to note that the newspaper El Independiente recently questioned Baja California Sur’s Undersecretary of Tourism, Fernando Ojeda, about whether there are estimates of a negative impact on tourism due to the security issues in the state, which were reported in the last quarter. He indicated that the most accurate measurement was based on flight occupancy arriving at the destination, and in this regard, the state remains above 80% with no cancellations.
