The disappearance situation in Baja California Sur has become a matter of great concern. In the last five years, 1,061 missing persons have been recorded, an alarming fact that reflects a historic record in the region.
Even more worrying is the increase in clandestine graves, which have risen from 45 in three years to a staggering total of 83 in the last year and a half.
Clandestine Graves on the Rise?
Lisette Collins, head of the State Commission for the Search for Persons, stated in a recent interview that the number of graves has increased by 84 percent during this period. “Graves were located last year, and the number will skyrocket to 39 clandestine graves in 2023,” Collins stated.
This increase in locations has brought with it a worrying phenomenon. The figures are alarming: as of August of this year, 64 new graves have been reported in the state capital, La Paz, alone. This situation has raised questions about the effectiveness of search efforts. “We are seeing an increase in the number of missing persons, but the number of missing persons is also alarming,” Collins stated.
What have the authorities stated?
Antonio López Rodríguez, head of the State Attorney General’s Office, reported that 22 human remains have been recovered from 68 missing persons found in graves, demonstrating the severity of the crisis. “The process has been complex, but we are not letting our guard down,” he emphasized.
Unfortunately, a lack of resources has made effective identification of the bodies difficult. “We are overwhelmed; we don’t have the necessary tools to identify the bodies,” commented López Rodríguez.
The alarming number of disappearances is increasing, averaging 500 per year. Authorities and search groups are working hard to address this painful reality. However, there is still a long way to go.
Baja California Sur faces a major challenge that puts the safety of its citizens at risk, and the increase in clandestine graves is just one part of this complex situation.
