Authorities in the municipality of Los Cabos confirmed the detection of extortion crimes targeting drivers of digital transportation platforms, a scheme that has already led to arrests.

The city council’s general secretary, Alberto Rentería Santana, stated that in recent days several reports were received of drivers who were briefly kidnapped, threatened, and forced to make electronic transfers after accepting ride requests through transportation apps.

One of the cases occurred in San José del Cabo, where a driver was intercepted and threatened with a bladed weapon. He was taken to a residence and robbed of his belongings and money via electronic bank transfers.

Upon being released, he sought help, and an operation was launched to apprehend the alleged perpetrators. A man and a woman were arrested as a result.

The official stated that this was a modus operandi they had detected and was already addressing at the state security council to identify criminal groups committing these crimes.

He told the media that in another case, a female Uber driver reported an attempted robbery with violence in her vehicle yesterday.

Following another operation, the suspect was arrested and turned over to the authorities.

“Through coordinated actions, we have arrested perpetrators of violence linked to extortion,” he said.

He added that security operations in the region will continue to be reinforced, as will intelligence efforts to dismantle the gangs operating with this type of crime.
