Baja California Sur (BCS) is solidifying its position as one of the leading national destinations for sport fishing, boasting an active tournament schedule that spans various regions and sectors, along with an economic impact exceeding $150 million annually, reported Martín Inzunza Tamayo, director of FONMAR in the state.

The official explained that the growth of this activity is reflected both in the number of participating boats and in its territorial expansion, from Isla Margarita to Cabo San Lucas. As an example, he highlighted the recent Bulnes tournament, which will generate over 100,000 pesos in revenue for the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department.

He also mentioned that earlier this year, a tournament was held in Puerto Los Cabos, organized by the Sánchez Navarro family to benefit the Pablo Foundation, a tournament with international participation.

Regarding the upcoming schedule, he announced that tournaments for children, both shore and deep-sea fishing, will be held during April. Later, in May, the Pink Promise tournament will take place, followed by the North Pacific Cup in Bahía de Tortugas and the Maja El Grande tournament, the latter with a prize purse of 1.3 million pesos.

Inzunza Tamayo emphasized that these events allow for coverage of the entire state, strengthening a consolidated value chain in destinations such as Los Cabos, La Paz, and Loreto, as well as boosting tourism promotion, despite challenges such as rising fuel costs and international factors.

Finally, he underscored the historical roots and sustainable approach of sport fishing in the region:

“The tradition is over 60 years old; it’s a tourism product with which we South Baja Californians are very familiar, and we’re going to keep improving it, conserving the species and practicing responsible and sport fishing. We’re all part of this conservation culture.”
