High-performance sailing will have a new chapter in the state with the Foil Baja California Sur challenge, a maritime voyage covering more than 200 kilometers from Loreto to La Ventana, in the municipality of La Paz, scheduled to begin on January 15.

Adam Withington Sánchez, a businessman and sailing athlete based in La Ventana, will be part of the group of registered captains crossing the Gulf of California aboard foil boards. He shares that the arrival in La Ventana is expected on the afternoon of January 17, subject to wind and sea conditions.

“The Foil Baja California Sur expedition brings together different sailing disciplines, including windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wingfoiling,” he explains.

All these disciplines are associated with the use of boards with a hydrofoil system, which allows the board to rise above the water’s surface, reducing friction and facilitating higher speeds, even over long distances.

Withington Sánchez, 35, originally from Cozumel, Quintana Roo, has lived in La Ventana since 2008 and was invited to participate in this expedition due to his experience in high-performance foiling. Locally, he is a partner at Playa Central Windsports, a center dedicated to sailing sports in La Ventana Bay.

Foil Baja California Sur will take place in one of the most iconic maritime corridors in northwestern Mexico and offers a non-motorized navigation challenge that combines physical endurance, knowledge of the sea, and weather forecasting.

The total route is approximately 200 kilometers, divided into three stages over three days, from January 15 to 17, 2026.

According to the official program, the first stage covers a 65-kilometer stretch from Loreto to the community of Agua Verde, with the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range and Loreto Bay National Park as scenic views.

The second day covers approximately 75 kilometers between Agua Verde and San Evaristo, a route that crosses areas considered among the most pristine in the Gulf of California.

The third and final stage begins with a land transfer from San Evaristo to El Saltito beach, from where participants will resume sailing to complete the final 35 kilometers to La Ventana.

The organizers have implemented a comprehensive safety plan for both water and land, as well as two nights of camping, hydration stations, and support services along the route.

The progress of the journey, as well as the arrival of participants at each point along the route, can be followed through the official digital platforms of the Foil Baja California Sur expedition (foilbajasur.com) and the participating athletes themselves, where progress reports, sailing conditions, and results for each day will be shared. The Instagram accounts @playacentralwindsports and @foilbajacaliforniasur are also available.

The international business magazine Forbes recently highlighted the city of La Paz as a must-see destination, while also emphasizing the community of La Ventana as a true paradise for kitesurfing and windsurfing, thanks to its ideal wind and sea conditions.

In the same article, the publication underscores the value of the Balandra Protected Natural Area, considered a global benchmark for the extraordinary beauty of its beaches, which reinforces Baja California Sur’s image as a prime location for adventure sports and tourism.
