The mayors of Los Cabos and La Paz, Christian Agúndez Gómez and Milena Quiroga Romero, asserted that there are no current land use permits or construction authorizations for properties located within the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, corresponding to their respective municipalities.
Both rejected any accusations of complicity on the part of municipal authorities and reiterated their commitment to protecting this Natural Protected Area.
Following the circulation of images on social media showing clearing and construction materials in areas of the mountain range, the mayor of Los Cabos affirmed that the City Council has not granted any permits and that any project that represents an environmental impact will be rejected.

“At the Los Cabos City Hall, there are no pending applications for construction permits, neither in the San Miguelito area, nor, obviously, anywhere within the biosphere reserve.”
For her part, the mayor of La Paz, Milena Quiroga Romero, reaffirmed that her administration maintains surveillance efforts to prevent illegal construction and preserve one of the most important ecosystems in Baja California Sur.
“On behalf of the City Council, we are defending Sierra La Laguna. No construction is underway, no permits have been submitted to the La Paz City Council, and I believe we have always demonstrated this; we are an administration committed to the environment, and we have defended protected natural areas.”
The Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve is located between the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos and covers an area of over 112,000 hectares.
Despite the reported irregularities and the images showing alleged construction materials in different areas of the mountain range, both city councils denied having issued any permits or authorizations for construction within the protected area.
